Foundation in the Principles of Roman Mosaics

Edinburgh – Manchester – London

If you want to understand how to build a solid foundation in mosaic work then the best place to start is how the mosaicists of ancient Greece & Rome worked. In this course, you will learn and apply the lessons we understand from examining those mosaics from the 5th century BCE to 6th century CE.

It’s a very practical session and we start on you identifying the rules straight away. To get the most out of the day you become part of my workshop staff and I train you as I would anyone working for me but at double the speed! You’ll find it hard work at times but it will also be fun and you will get a sense of accomplishment when you start looking at those ancient mosaics and seeing things you never knew were there before.

Everything you need is included in the price (as well as your workbook) and if you don’t finish your mosaic you will take away enough tesserae to finish at home.
You also get a free zoom call to go over what you have done once you have a chance to step back and take it all in.

Freehand Roman Geometric Mosaics

Do you want to learn how to create a Roman geometric mosaic without having a drawing on your baseboard to follow?

In this unique workshop you will learn how to look at the most common strand mosaics and through different exercises identify how they are put together and then create your own without having to have any drawing on your baseboard to follow.

Contrary to what most people think, this is not some novelty trick way of working but, as you will find out is faster, more practical way for making geometric borders and motifs.

The techniques I used to create this mosaic, left, without any guidelines are the exact same ones that you will learn.

Testimonials from previous students

A Roman mosaics workshop with Lawrence got me started and I haven’t stopped since. A wonderful opportunity…. try it

‘I’d wanted to try Roman mosaics for years but was put off by the difficulties of obtaining the proper materials and finding a good teacher. Lawrence overcame both obstacles brilliantly. He is a talented and inspiring mosaic creator, who is determined to teach mosaic making the Roman way but also incredibly patient and helpful. All the pupil has to do is to show some keeness. He was willing to answer my endless questions by email. I thoroughly recommend his courses and am glad I found him before everyone else does!’

Stephanie Trotter.

I just had to write & say what a fantastic time I had today! I was delighted with my pieces of work & thank you so much for the instruction & history given. I would love to be able to do more, so please let me know if there are any more in the offing!

Thanking you once again, & hopefully we may meet again soon,

I just wanted to say THANX for the mosaics workshop on saturday – I really enjoyed myself.  I found the whole workshop very inspiring & very user friendly.  I  congratulate you on your talk that you gave at the beginning too, very interesting!

Thank you Laurence for a fascinating day making my first Roman Mosaic. You made the process clear and easy to understand. The pace was great – not too hectic but with no dull bits. I look forward to my next workshop, and to finishing the background of the hare I did today. Thank you, too, for (gently) pushing me when I began to dither & ‘over think it’ after lunch. I would recommend anyone with an interest in mosaics, or who is looking for a versatile new hobby, to attend one of your workshops.
